Short Desciption
For eight centuries Đurđevac, a small lowland town, managed to develop and preserve a cultural and historical identity based on the existence of a medieval castle that still stands, on its tradition as the seat of a Military Frontier regiment from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, and perhaps most of all on a famous legend about a chicken. The medieval castle, today called Stari grad (Old Castle), was the seat of a feudal estate only during its early centuries. It never developed into a manor house because it became the headquarters of a military garrison in the sixteenth century. However, at least it was preserved, which is truly rare for lowland, medieval, moated feudal castles in Croatia. Today Stari grad in Đurđevac has a restaurant, beer parlour and hall for wedding receptions on the ground floor, an art gallery, Đurđevac Museum and radio station on the first floor. In 1997 an art gallery to house the donation of the artist Ivan Lacković-Croata was opened in the attic.
